Japanese Club

Masako Beecken served as a screening committee member for the Fulbright Memorial Fund Program. She was also one of the interviewers for the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) program at the Consulate General of Japan in Denver.

She also conducted a two-week long personal tour to Japan for five students of Japanese in the summer of 2002. They stayed with Japanese families for a week and took a one-week trip to visit many places including Hiroshima, Kyoto, Himeji and Kanazawa.

CSU students of Japanese courses did a superb job at statewide Japanese speech contests held in the fall of 2001 and 2002. All four CSU contestants in 2001 received awards and five out of eight students received awards in 2002.

Two teams of CSU second year Japanese class students won first and second places at the annual Japan Bowl competition held in March 2002. CSU is the three time defending champion.

Many students were awarded scholarships to study in Japan such as the Association of International Education, JAPAN (AIEJ--an affiliated organization of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture) scholarship, the National Security Education Program (NSEP) scholarship and the Bridging scholarship.

Japanese Language Camps were held each semester sponsored by the Japanese Student Association. The fall, 2002 camp was the biggest camp ever. More than 80 people participated and enjoyed a fun-filled event.

The Japanese Visiting Volunteer Instructor Program (J-VVIP) has continued to send Japanese senior instructors from Japan to help students of Japanese in and out of class.

After 9/11 CSU students of Japanese, together with the Japanese Student Association, initiated a "6000 Paper Cranes for Healing" fund-raising project. Over 2,000 dollars was raised and donated to the American Red Cross. 6,000 paper cranes with signatures and messages were sent to the Pentagon, Pennsylvania and New York City (the U.N., fire departments and schools).
