The Chinese program offers three years of Chinese language study and a Chinese Culture and Literature class. For those who would like to pursue further study in Chinese language, independent study with the instructor can be arranged.
LCHI105 First-year Chinese I, fall semester.
LCHI107 First-year Chinese II, spring semester.
After one year of Chinese class, you will learn about 1000 characters and basic conversations on greetings, family, time, shopping weather, transportation renting an apartment, seeing a doctor, post office, travel and etc.
LCHI200 Second-year Chinese I, fall semester.
LCHI201 Second-year Chinese II, spring semester
The second year class will be conducted mostly in Chinese. You will learn more advanced vocabulary and grammar structure. The topics of lessons include schooling, sports, the influence of TV and movies, dating and more.
LCHI304 Third-year Chinese I, fall semester
LCHI305, Third-year Chinese II, spring semester
The third-year Chinese mainly has discussions on social issues and Chinese fables. The topics include gender equality, health insurance, crime and environmental issues. Students are expected to conduct all discussions and give presentations in Chinese only.
LCHI250, Chinese Culture and Literature in Translation, spring semester.
This is neither a language nor a literature class. Therefore, you will not be required to have Chinese language or literature writing skill. This class is conducted in English. We will be using the translated Chinese literature, Chinese movies, collected essays and films to understand Chinese culture, history and way of life. Class lectures will focus on important historical background from the 1910s thru the May 4 th Movement, the Anti-Japanese War, the Civil War, the Cultural Revolution, the post-Mao era to the current state of China.
