Herr Lehmann (2003) 105 min.; September 4th

In October 1989, the part of the West Berlin borough of Kreuzberg called SO 36, had been largely shut off by the Wall from the rest of the city for 28 years. A lethargic sub-culture of students, artists, bohemians and barflys had flourished among crumbling buildings. Part of that microcosm is barkeeper Frank, semi-formally called 'Herr Lehmann' by friends and patrons. He hangs out drinking, sports utter disregard for anything beyond SO 36 and lazily pursues an affair with cook Katrin. His lifestyle is gradually disturbed, when his parents show up for a visit, things go awry with Katrin and his best friend Karl starts to act strange. Meanwhile, political turmoil mounts on the other side of the Wall.

Das Wunder von Bern (2003) 118 min.; October 2nd

The Miracle of Bern (German title: Das Wunder von Bern) is a 2003 film by Sönke Wortmann, which tells the story of the unexpected West German victory in the 1954 World Cup Final in Bern, Switzerland, on July 4 1954, and the story of a young boy and his depressed father who are brought together by the German success. The film can be regarded as a portrait of post-war Germany. With over 6,000,000 cinema visitors, it is one of Germany's best-selling films.

While Richard, a miner from Essen, was a Soviet prisoner of war, his wife, two sons and one daughter have maintained a comfortable standard of living without him. When he is unexpectedly repatriated in 1954, he has severe problems in reintegrating himself with his family. His elder son has become a Communist, instead of his ideals from the Nazi time, his daughter flirts with American GIs and his 11-year-old son Matthias, whom Richard has never known, admires a local football hero, Helmut Rahn of Rot-Weiß Essen. While Richard is initially very stern about Matthias' love for football, he gradually softens such that, on the night before the final, father and son drive to Bern to see the match. An additional plot of the movie is the personal triumph of Helmut Rahn, for whom Matthias becomes a lucky mascot, Rahn, nicknamed "The Boss," has a successful record at club level, though is rarely chosen to play at national level in trainer Sepp Herberger's team. There are several miraculous events in the movie. For Richard, it is the sudden joy of scoring a goal with an abandoned football. For Rahn, it is seeing Matthias on the touchline that spurs him into scoring the winning goal. For Sepp Herberger, however, the miracles are more mundane: the sudden rain that slows down the Hungarians, coupled with Adi Dassler's revolutionary screw-in football spikes.

Knocking on Heaven's Door (1997) 89 min.; October 30th

Rudi Wurlitzer hat Knochenkrebs. In der „Abnippelstation“ (O-Ton) eines Krankenhauses trifft er auf Martin Brest. Martin hat einen inoperablen, todbringenden Hirntumor. Zusammen fassen sie den Entschluss, dass sie ihre letzten Tage auf keinen Fall so verbringen wollen; außerdem will Martin Rudi das Meer zeigen, das dieser noch nie gesehen hat. Sie nehmen eine bereitstehende Flasche Tequila mit und klauen im Parkhaus des Krankenhauses ein Mercedes 230 SL-Cabrio in Babyblau. Was beide nicht wissen: Das Auto gehört den Gangstern Henk und Abdul, die von ihrem Chef Frankie den Auftrag bekommen haben, das Auto zu Curtiz zu fahren. Frankie schuldet ihm noch eine Million Mark, die er im Kofferraum des Benz deponiert hat.Inzwischen brauchen Rudi und Martin Geld, um ans Meer zu kommen. Martin findet im Handschuhfach des Wagens eine Pistole und ihm kommt bei einem Tankstopp die Idee, die Tankstelle zu überfallen. Dies ist der Start einer wilden Verfolgungsjagd mit den beiden Todkranken, den Gangstern und der Polizei. Immer wieder gelingt es Rudi und Martin, mit den unwahrscheinlichsten Tricks allen Verfolgern zu entkommen. Zuletzt erfüllen sie sich jeder noch einen Wunsch: Martin will seiner Mutter, die ein großer Elvis-Fan ist, einen Fleetwood Cadillac schenken und kann auch wirklich ein Exemplar auftreiben. Das restliche Geld verschicken die beiden per Post an irgendwelche Menschen. Rudi will noch einmal in einem Bordell mit zwei Frauen zusammen sein und sucht sich dafür ausgerechnet den Club von Frankie aus. Sie werden erkannt und von Henk und Abdul kassiert. Als Frankie erfährt, dass sein Geld von den Freunden restlos verbraucht wurde, will er beide töten. Curtiz kommt dazu und verhindert dies; er lässt, nachdem ihm alles erklärt wurde ("Du hast noch nie das Meer gesehen ? - Dann wäre es besser, du läufst. (Im Original: "Then you better run, before you run out of time"), die beiden Freunde sogar noch unbehelligt entkommen und diese machen sich sofort auf den Weg Richtung Meer. Als Rudi und Martin dann endlich nach einer abenteuerlichen Reise den Ozean erreichen, und ihren Augen nicht trauen können, ist es Martin, der noch einmal an seiner Zigarette zieht und dann schließlich tot in den Sand fällt. Rudi ist nicht erstaunt, sondern schaut ihn nur an, um sich neben ihn zu setzen und in die Brandung zu schauen.

Frohe Weihnachten (2005) 115 min.; November 27th

This film is based on the true stories of the 1914 WWI Christmas ceasefires along the Western front. The story centers upon six main characters: a Scottish priest working as a stretcher-bearer; a Scottish Lieutenant; the French Lieutenant Audebert, the reluctant son of a general, whose call to fight has meant leaving his bed-bound pregnant wife; a Jewish German Lieutenant, and two famous opera stars, German tenor Nikolaus Sprink and his Danish lover Anna Sörensen). Christmas arrives, along with the snow, and bundles of presents from families and the army head office. That night the soldiers' lives on both sides of the trenches are changed forever; drawn together by Christmas spirit, they lay down their arms on December 24, 1914. French, British and German soldiers emerge from their trenches to meet their enemies, shaking hands and even exchanging cigarettes, champagne, and chocolate, as they wish each other "Joyeux Noël," "Frohe Weihnachten" and "Merry Christmas."
