The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers two options leading to the M.A. degree in Languages, Literatures and Cultures with specializations in French, German, and Spanish. Although the two options differ in scope and emphasis, a core of required courses common to both stresses the development and enhancement of linguistic, research, and critical skills. Both options are designed to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue advanced studies in a foreign language and its literary and broad cultural manifestations as one of the liberal arts. Both options are also designed to serve students who, for professional reasons, seek to continue their studies for eventual admission to a doctoral program or to meet specific career objectives in the private, governmental, or academic sectors.
Departmental M. A.: selective focus on literature, language, and culture
Interdiscplinary M.A.: language, literature and culture as well as another field in the humanities
Joint M.A.: combination of a Foreign Language and Literatures M.A. and an English M.A. (TESL)
Graduates from the M.A. program in Foreign Languages and Literatures have gone forth into teaching careers at high schools and institutions of higher learning in Colorado and many other states, with employment as instructors and lecturers. Others have entered or successfully completed Ph.D. programs at such universities as Princeton, Penn State, University of Arizona, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, and UT-Austin. Still others completed another M.A. in a second field, or have taken employment in the private sector such as the computer industry, or pursued careers in creative work such as translating, editing, writing, and acting.
