Developing long-term inventory and monitoring systems for park units. The long-term maintenance of the biotic integrity of natural resources is a major responsibility for Federal land managers. We have developed field and laboratory techniques for acquiring data, using aquatic macroinvertebrate community attributes such as structure and function to help managers measure the health of their systems. Programs have been implemented, and new approaches are being designed.
Fruit tree entomology. We have studied the host status of the apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella in Colorado commercial apple orchards. Additionally, we are interested in the biology and distribution of leafhopper vectors of Western X-disease (X-MLO) in Colorado peach orchards. We are also beginning a program for controlling and monitoring wine grape insects, especially preventing the establishment of new pests.
Revisions of groups of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Diptera. We have been revising selected taxa, with an emphasis on the analysis of intraspecific and interspecific variation. A long-term goal is a synopsis of the Plecoptera of Mexico and Central America.
