EN103 INSECTS, SCIENCE AND SOCIETY LABORATORY

Prerequisites: EN102 or concurrent registration
Objectives:
1. Gain an understanding of the Phylum Arthropoda, its Classes,
and the major Orders making up the Class Insecta.
2. Understand the types of metamorphosis insects undergo.
3. Coordinated with the lecture, gain an understanding of the
major insect Orders, their characteristics, and major
representative species.
4. Gain an understanding of the mjaor insect species as pests of
man, animals and plants and the roles they play.
Description: Laboratories, after the introductory sections, cover
the major insect Orders, their charactersitics, metamorphosis,
representative species, life histories, and impacts, if any, on man
and society. Short lectures are followed by liberal use of visuals
in depicting Order characteristics and selected insects.
Preserved, and some living, specimens are used visually and with
binocular microscopes to enhance learning concepts.
Activities: Short lectures, preserved and living insects, use of
microscope slides and microscopes to enhance learning.
