E692: Rhetoric and Composition Seminar

The seminar offers a weekly forum in which students and faculty in the Rhetoric and Composition Program present and discuss scholarly work and research in progress. Presentations will include the full range of work currently conducted by faculty and students in the program.

The seminar is a central component of the Program, serving several key functions:

1. a forum for new ideas,
2. a means of showing students the full range of research methods,
3. a means of integrating core and individualized requirements,
4. an avenue for regular interchange between faculty and students, and
5. an opportunity for academic and professional development.

Moreover, the seminar will give students practical experience in

1. formulating problems,
2. choosing and working with theories, methods, and procedures, and
3. preparing work for professional audiences.

This course is offered in the spring semester. Students will normally attend the seminar for two semesters, earning one credit in each semester. In spring of the first year, students will attend all seminar presentations and participate as discussion or response leaders. They will also read, critique, and write weekly responses to seminar presentations through an electronic discussion. The Rhetoric and Composition Program coordinator will also post items on the forum to encourage students to integrate the perspectives from the core courses and to consider specific ways that research addresses mixed audiences. In spring of the second year--after completing the Current Perspectives courses and a research methods course--students taking the seminar will, in addition to requirements for the first semester, present and defend a report on their work.

At the beginning of each spring semester, the faculty coordinator will call for "papers" from students planning to complete degrees in that calendar year. The coordinator will schedule presentations by students and will fill in departmental faculty and participants outside the Department and University who wish to present. Students will be encouraged to submit revised seminar papers to conferences, journals, and other outside audiences.
