E687B Internship: Administration of Composition Programs
Prerequisites: E501 and E684
This course is for graduate students in English who are interested in learning about the administration of college composition programs. It requires both theoretical and practical readings and also administrative field work that includes observation and evaluation of classroom teaching and grading.
In the course students will discuss issues central to the administration of a composition program, such as designing syllabi; choosing placement procedures; training and supervising personnel; creating in-service programs; reviewing texts; understanding common student problems; evaluating courses, teachers, and students; establishing various kinds of auxiliary learning centers; selecting competency exams; and so forth.
In addition to the activities mentioned above, students visit a of number CO150 classes, prepare written reports, and meet individually with the E687 instructor to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each class observed. E687 students visit each other's classes, practice conference techniques, and are encouraged to video tape their own composition class. Class members also review the grading of a variety of CO150 essays and discuss effective ways to offer feedback evaluation to both new and experienced teachers.
Reading, field work, and discussions lead to a number of short writing assignments and a term project/paper. E687 is a prerequisite for the CSU composition lectureship positions.
