E527 Theories of Foreign/Second Language Learning

Prerequisite: E 526

This course is designed to develop an understanding of the process of second language acquisition. The role of cognitive, linguistic, and demographic variables in the acquisition of foreign or second languages is also examined. Extensive reading of primary articles in the field of SLA form the core of the course.

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

1. Understand the problems in attempting to develop a comprehensive theory of second language acquisition.
2. Possess the skills necessary to evaluate various approaches to the study of second language acquisition (SLA).
3. Be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of selected models of second language learning.
4. Understand the role of various cognitive, linguistic, and demographic factors in the learning of a second or foreign language.
5. Understand the various ways in which the learning environment can influence language learning.
6. Be able to apply the results of research in learning research to the second language classroom.
