E526, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language

This course is an introductory course in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. No specific types of students are emphasized; teaching of adults and children in various settings is covered. The course includes the principles and theories underlying teaching practice and how that knowledge can guide practice. As such, it is a knowledge rather than a skills course.

Course content includes the goals of English language teaching; theories of language teaching and learning; course and syllabus design; modern communicative approaches to teaching; the teaching of grammar, speaking, listening, reading, and writing; testing; and the choice and preparation of teaching materials.

Major course activities are reading, discussion; and lecture on course materials; group work on language teaching questions and problems; and the writing of short papers that report on outside reading or relate course content to personal experience. Students complete a final project applying course material to a teaching situation.

A practicum, in which students observe or teach in limited settings, is required.
