E 521 Syntactic Analysis

Intensive analysis of English syntax within the framework of generative linguistic theory and with some attention to application of theoretical models and research.

Besides a thorough knowledge of English syntax, the course attempts to develop an awareness of the nature of linguistic theory and argumentation. It emphasizes research within the generative paradigm, particularly as formulated by Noam Chomsky. Students are prepared to read critically both theoretical and applied literature in syntax. Applications include Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, other foreign language teaching, and language processing (both human and mechanical).

Topics considered in the course include: fundamental notions of syntactic analysis (e.g., competence, grammatical well-formedness, linguistic formalism); basic sentence structure; syntactic rules (e.g., phrase-structure and transformational); and complex grammatical structures (e.g., question, passives, indirect objects, subordination, complementation).
