E504, Descriptive Linguistics
This class provides the linguistic backgrounds and analytic skills needed by ESL teachers; it also prepares students for more advanced study in linguistic topics; finally, it explores issues relevant to teaching ESL.
Fundamental concepts of language include phonetics, phonology, morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence grammar), semantics, and pragmatics (language use). The focus is on English, with some attention to other languages. Students are required to do linguistic analyses. Selected ESL related topics include error analysis, contrastive analysis, teaching materials, and rationales for teaching grammar directly or indirectly in ESL classes.
