E478 Modern Poetry
Prerequisite: E240Modern Poetry has two main goals: to introduce students to a body of poetry which in many ways challenges their assumptions as readers, and to contextualize the various difficulties of modern poetry within cultural and national histories, as well as within the large and influential movement within the arts called "modernism”. Thus, this is a course in "how to read" in a number of senses: how to read a variety of specific poems, how to read a group of poems and prose writings by one author, and how to read specific poems within complex historical and cultural contexts.
The poets covered by the course include those writing from 1890 to the present, with emphasis on the period of high modernism 1910-1940. These include (but are not limited to) Yeats, Eliot, Pound, Frost, Stevens, Moore, Williams, Lawrence, Auden, Thomas, H.D., Gertrude Stein, Ginsberg.
