E476 English Poetry I
Prerequisite: E240Though this course focuses on only a selection of the rich body of poetry written during the period from 1590 through 1750, the poets and their poetry will provide the student with an awareness of poetry as a reflection of the debates, anxieties, passions, and pragmatics of an era of rapid change and disruptive upheaval in the social order and cultural values of the Early Modern Period through the first half of Age of Enlightenment. The course examines the poetry from many angles: as dense poetic texts, as representations of a variety of poetic genre, as reflections of the individual poet's style and contribution to British poetry, and as cultural productions conversing with the forces of history.
Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare, Donne, Herbert, Marvell, Milton, Dryden, Pope, and others.
