E475 American Poetry
Prerequisite: E240This course investigates developing traditions in American poetry from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century. Emphasis will be on the diversity of early poetic voices. A variety of poets may be included, among them Gaspar Perez de Villagra (in translation), Bradstreet, Taylor, Freneau, anonymous native American poets, Poe, Emerson, Whittier, Bryant, Lowell, Holmes, Dickinson, Whitman, Crane, Frost, Langston Hughes, Frances E. W. Harper, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Claude McKay, Edna Millay, Amy Lowell and H.D.
