E 441 - American Prose after 1900

This course provides an advanced survey of twentieth-century U.S. fiction and non-fiction, often by tracing a particular theme chronologically. Themes and approaches will vary according to the professor teaching the course, but the texts will most often be explored in the context of issues such as race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, environment, nation, disability, and species. Discussions and assignments will be driven by critical debates from academic fields such as literary theory and criticism, American studies, and cultural studies. The course is designed for upper-level English majors with prior knowledge of American literature and literary theory.

Prerequisite: One course in Literature
