E438 Contemporary Native American Literature
Focusing primarily on contemporary Native American fiction, poetry, and autobiography, this course examines Native American writing both as a distinctive American literary tradition and as cultural expression of indigenous peoples. Through literature the course examines numerous historical and cultural themes: the historical experience of Native Americans from first contact to the present; relationships between oral and written traditions; conflict and integration of opposing world views; trickster tradition and cultural uses of humor. Assigned texts are from major contemporary writers such as N.
