E438 Contemporary Native American Literature

Focusing primarily on contemporary Native American fiction, poetry, and autobiography, this course examines Native American writing both as a distinctive American literary tradition and as cultural expression of indigenous peoples. Through literature the course examines numerous historical and cultural themes: the historical experience of Native Americans from first contact to the present; relationships between oral and written traditions; conflict and integration of opposing world views; trickster tradition and cultural uses of humor. Assigned texts are from major contemporary writers such as N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Silko, James Welch, Linda Hogan, Louise Erdrich, Gerald Vizenor, Joy Harjo, and Louis Owens.
