E437 Heritage of the West
Prerequisite: one course in American historyHeritage of the West explores the cultural history of the American West through fiction and essays. Reading novels by such writers as A.B. Guthrie, Jr., O.E. Rolvaag, Willa Cather, Owen Wister and Edward Abbey, students gain an appreciation of the meaning of the term "Westerner" and study the historical roots of several "Western" traits and traditions.
Themes found in E437 can include manifest destiny, the effect of wilderness, cultural disjunctions, social evolution, individualism, and the sense of community.
In addition to novels, students will be assigned books and/or essays which are academic discussions of the West and its varied cultures; therefore an interest in history, sociology and social psychology is a definite asset when taking the course.
Class discussion is encouraged. There are 2-4 tests over the reading material and two research papers are required.
