E435 American Fiction, 1914 to 1945
Prerequisite: One literature courseThe purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the content, structure, style, and context of significant fiction during the period between World War I and World War II. The major emphasis of the course will be on close analysis of the literary text itself, with some attention to historical background and other influences shaping the concept of Modernism. The course typically focuses on the novel, and, to a lesser degree, the short story, including a close analysis of the strategic devices used by the artists to present their ideas. Finally, there will be on-going discussion of the similarities and differences among the various authors and the content, structures, and styles of their fiction. Representative authors might include Anderson, Cather, Dos Passos, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Hurston, Lewis, Porter, Steinbeck, Toomer, West, Wright.
