E432 20th Century British Fiction
Prerequisite: one course in literatureThis course covers fiction written by English and Irish authors between 1890 and the present. Specific texts change from semester to semester--the balance between modernist and contemporary fiction will vary from one version of the course to another, as will the mix of novel and short story. Examples of authors represented in this course include Beckett, Woolf, Joyce, Forster, Mansfield, Conrad, Edna O'Brien, Flann O'Brien, Compton-Burnett, Ishiguro, and Elizabeth Bowen. All versions of the course will attend to issues of narrative discourse, particularly those characteristic of twentieth-century writing, and to issues of reading raised by historical and cultural contexts.
