E 428 - Postcolonial Literature
Beginning in the sixteenth century, England ruled over and defined itself in relation to a set of colonies in diverse geographical regions. This course will introduce students to a variety of texts that dramatize the “global reach” of English literature and culture and explore the links between colonialist texts and those texts that write against colonial/imperial culture. Because the subject matter is large and ranges across centuries and continents, instructors of this course might choose to offer a sweeping historical overview of the British empire or focus in-depth on a specific period or a region either before or after colonialism officially ended.
