Undergraduate Courses

E403 Nature Writing

Prerequisite: One course in literature or CO301 A-D or E 311 A-C

This course is at once a literature course and a writing course. Students will read a variety of well-known or exemplary works of literary nonfiction about the natural world and human relations with it, primarily American works from the 20th century, with attention paid both to the literary techniques and to the thematic and political issues that characterize this tradition: how humans fit in to the rest of the natural world, how that world can best be protected and why, what wild places mean to individuals, and so on. At the same time, and with these readings as a background, they will do a substantial amount of their own nature writing and discuss this writing with other students in a workshop format.
