Undergraduate Courses

E 401 Teaching Reading

Prerequisite: CO301 A or B or C or D

Required for all English education majors, this course introduces current theory, research, and best practices for teaching and assessing reading in secondary schools so that teachers can help their students better understand, interpret, and evaluate a variety of print and visual texts. The course aims to help English education students articulate a theory of reading instruction; design classroom instruction that blends the teaching of strategic reading with the teaching of literature; and understand ways that literacy contexts, ways of reading and large- and small-scale assessment shape definitions of literacy and, consequently, of reading practices.
