Prerequisite: One course in literatureThis course provides an in-depth study of selected American authors since 1870. Emphasis will be placed on works by a select few authors rather than on a comprehensive survey of works from the period. Instructors will select representative works from such writers as Mark Twain, Henry James, Theodore Dreiser, Willa Cather, Sinclair Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, Eugene O'Neill, William Faulkner, Arthur Miller, Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens, Katherine Anne Porter, Elizabeth Bishop, Denise Levertov, Adrienne Rich, and Toni Morrison.
