E371 American Authors to 1870
Prerequisite: one course in literatureThis course provides an in-depth study of selected American authors before 1870. Emphasis will be placed on a close reading of several works by each or four to six authors rather than on a comprehensive survey of many works and authors. The instructor will choose interesting and representative selections from a variety of genres--novels, short stories, poetry, essays, biographies--from significant writers such as Bradstreet, Franklin, Douglass, Poe, Thoreau, Emerson, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, and Whitman.
