E356 Asian Literature
This course is a survey in Asian prose literature from India, China and Japan beginning with the earliest literature and moving to the present. Since few students have any background at all in Asian studies we focus on understanding the cultures through their literature. The goal is that students will be able to read Asian literature on their own with a real appreciation of the cultures and literature involved. While poetry is very important in these three Asian cultures, a survey of such breadth is necessarily very spotty, so this survey is confined to their prose. The genres covered include the epic, drama, short story and novel.
Authors covered may include Valmiki, Kalidasa, Tagore, Narayan, Desai, Chuang-Tzu, Kung fu-Tzu, Wu Ch’eng-en, Lu Hsuin, Pa Chin, Lao She, Murasaki, Shonagon, Motokiyo, Mishima, Tanazaki, Akutagawa, Kawabata, Ariyoshi, and others. About one fourth are women writers.
While there are no prerequisites for the class, it is recommended
that students have at least sophomore standing and some course
work involving the study of other cultures.
