E343 Shakespeare

Shakespeare II, the second of a two-course segment, surveys Shakespeare's work after Hamlet. Emphases include the tragic vision, the problem play, a later tragedy, and the final romances. As in Shakespeare I, which is not a prerequisite for Shakespeare II, emphasis is on characterization and character development, sophisticated techniques of language and imagery, complexity of both comic and tragic vision, and the integration of forms in the vision of history. The student should complete Shakespeare II with not only an ability to read and understand the plays, but with a working sense of Shakespeare use of language and methods of development of character.
