E341 Principles of Literary Criticism
Prerequisite: One course in literatureThis course is an introduction to the theory and practice of literary criticism. Though individual sections will differ in specifics, in each, students will study literary criticism as a mode of thinking interesting in its own right; will explore the relationships among literary theory, literature, and literary criticism; and will learn about and experiment with a range of recent and current theories and approaches, including such possibilities as formalism (Russian formalism, New Criticism, myth criticism, structuralism), post-structuralism, psychoanalytic criticism, feminism, Marxism, New Historicism, and cultural studies.
This course should be taken early in the junior year, as it will help students think and write in all of their subsequent literature courses.
