E 239/ET 239 Introduction to Chicano Literature
This course will study the representation of Chicano(a) works in prose, poetry, drama, and folklore. The course will examine critically the literary output of Mexican Americans since 1848 with an in depth discussion of Mexican traditions that date back as far as the sixteenth century. Included will be an exploration of the major developments in Chicano(a) literature and criticism, as well as the relationship between literature and a changing Chicano(a) sociocultural environment. The broad representation and historical evolution of Chicano(a) writing will be explored through the examination of prominent themes such as the search for identity, feminism, homoeroticism, and internationalism.
