E235 Introduction to Folklore
This introduces students to the study of culture through folklore and shows the connections of folklore to anthropology, sociology and literature. The various kinds of folklore are discussed with primary focus being an orally transmitted folklore like myth, legend, folktale, and belief. We pay particular attention to the differences between traditional and non-traditional cultures particularly as defined by the anthropologist Edward T. Hall. We do not focus on any one culture, although American cultures are used as a touchstone for comparison.
We read one epic, usually the Hindu Ramayana and one novel, usually Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in addition to some folklore texts.
