E179 Western American Literature
E179 is a historical survey of the literature of the American West, beginning with Native American creation legends and Spanish expeditionary literature, then continuing through to present-day poetry and fiction.Material in the course includes legends, essays, journals, short stories and poetry. Writers include Andy Adams, Owen Wister, Black Elk, Standing Bear, Willa Cather, Mari Sandoz, William Stafford, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, A.B. Guthrie, Jr., John Steinbeck, Wallace Stegner, Rudolfo Anaya and others.
Requirements usually include 3-4 tests over the reading material and two researched essays, but may vary from instructor to instructor.
"West" for purposes of this class refers to the trans-Mississippi West between 1540 and the present.
