- Select the category that best describes who you are (e.g., a
prospective first-year student, a student transferring from another
institution, someone seeking a second bachelor's degree, someone
seeking readmittance to the University).
- Review the University's admission requirements.
- Complete the Online Application for Admission Form.
Graduate Study
- Review the Department's graduate programs to determine which program best fits your needs. - Review the Graduate School's Admissions Requirements and Procedures.
- Complete the Graduate School Electronic Application Form or complete and mail Graduate School Form 1, available from the Graduate School or the Department, to:

- To complete your application, you should also send the following to the Department:
- Two official transcripts from each college or university you have attended
- Three or more letters of recommendation from instructors or employers
- A statement of purpose-your goals for graduate school
- A writing sample pertinent to your program (see Creative Writing section for special requirements for that program)
- If you are a non-native speaker of English, a TOEFL score of 575 or higher and TWE results (official copy required).
- The application for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, should you choose to apply for one. The Department's GTA Application Form is available in Portable Document Format.
- For applicants to the literature program: Results from the general GRE exam. (Subject tests are not required.) GRE scores must be reported by the end of the first semester of graduate work. They are recommended for students applying for fellowships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships, and required for students seeking conditional admission. Please note that applicants to programs other than literature are not required to take the GRE unless they have earned an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0.
