TEMPORARY TEACHING POSITIONS FOR FORMER GRADUATE ASSISTANTS WHO HAVE NOT FINISHED THEIR PROGRAM OF STUDY

English Department policy limits assistantships to two years for the MA and three years for the MFA. Many students, for completely legitimate reasons, do not finish their program of study during that time. To help these students through the final phases of their program, the Department will allow such students to apply for temporary teaching positions.

The following conditions apply:

  1. All such support is contingent on funding. The department's budget is frequently not set until just before a semester begins. Thus students may not know whether they will have positions until quite late. Funding for this program will come from dollars allocated for temporary teaching; no funds will be taken from existing graduate assistantships.
  2. Candidates must be making satisfactory progress toward their degrees.
  3. Normally, funded students will receive only a semester of support, though they remain eligible for up to a year.
  4. To be eligible, students must be former graduate teaching assistants.
  5. No tuition waivers will be available. Students are encouraged to sign up for all credits involved in their programs of study before their assistantships run out.
  6. Salaries for non-degreed instructors will be somewhat less than for degreed instructors.

Interested students should make application to the Department Head by May 15. If they are eligible, they will be added to the pool of applicants for temporary sections.
