COURSE PROPOSAL FORMAT

E470 Individual Author

We are looking for new proposals for E470 authors. Although we are especially interested in American and/or women authors, we will be glad to have proposals for any author. We are also asking those of you who have long-standing proposals to re-submit your requests in light of the guidelines below so that all proposals will be consistent in format.

Proposals, which need not exceed one page single-spaced, should describe important characteristics of the proposed course, including the following:

  1. Nature of major author
    1. single author
    2. significant corpus of work
    3. representative of an era, philosophy, or movement (e.g., modernism)
    4. critical questions, issues, intellectual content

(That is, why is this author a good candidate for treatment in a course like this? Why is this author particularly relevant or interesting to undergraduates?)

  2. Distribution
    1. British--American
    2. male--female
    3. 20th century--pre-20th century
  3. Relevance of the course as a "Capstone" experience. Even though the core curriculum will not affect the senior level courses for 2-3 years, we should anticipate its impact. The definition of a capstone course is: "a senior -level course that focuses on a significant and comprehensive synthesis of the academic and/or artistic experience either within a discipline or among disciplines....this synthesis shall accomplish the following goals: a) prepare students for future applications of their skills and knowledge; b) help students to commence the transition into independent professional and scholarly activities; c) help students to develop their own role and identity in the larger professional and/or scholarly community and in society."

(That is, how do the reading/writing/speaking activities you envision for this class fulfill the above definitions.)

  4. Probable reading list
  5. Prerequisites (at least E341 and one other upper-division literature course)

Note: a day to day syllabus is not required.
