CHALLENGING COURSES BY EXAMINATION

Students wishing to challenge an English course by examination should pick up the appropriate form at the University Testing Service, and register with the Assistant Chair or Graduate Coordinator, as appropriate. The Coordinator will assign faculty examiners.

Challenges are limited to students challenging established undergraduate courses, excluding independent study (E-495), variable-topics courses (e.g. E465, 480), and courses whose major emphasis is on the in-class development of critical or creative processes (e.g. CO-301, E-210, E-311, E-341, E-402, E-405 and E-412). The university composition requirement (CO-150) may be challenged only through the placement examination, which may be taken only once.

Challenges are intensive and comprehensive, appropriate to the scope and depth of courses that may normally require a series of examinations and essays.

The minimum passing grade is C.
