| E495 REQUIREMENTS
Independent study allows the undergraduate
student to pursue reading, research, writing, and criticism
beyond the bounds provided by regular classes--supervised, but
not instructed, by the faculty. Its purpose, recognizing the
limits of the university, is to provide individualized opportunity
for students with special interests and extraordinary abilities.
However, a secondary, "unphilosophical" purpose is to provide
some slightly flexible route to regular study for certain students
who, without fault, cannot schedule the regular curriculum.
- Under normal circumstances, an E-495 project should not
parallel our regularly offered courses.
- Independent study should be entered from course work that
provides its foundations in subject matter, critical or
research method, and so forth.
- E-495 is rarely taken for more than two credit hours.
More than two hours must be justified as extraordinary.
Up to six credits of E-495 may count toward graduation requirements.
- An E-495 project cannot be a substitute for any of the
required upper level distributional requirements.
- The student, with the help of the supervising professor,
designs a proposal that describes the purpose, the material
to be covered, and the methods of evaluation.
- The student submits the project proposal on the E-495
form (in duplicate) to the Undergraduate Coordinator for
approval prior to registering for E495.
- The student's advisor, supervising professor, and undergraduate
coordinator sign the E-495 form which is then turned in
to one of the secretaries in the English Office.
- The supervising professor teaches an E-495 as an overload.
- Maximum credits of E-495 in all fields allowed toward
degree: 4.
- Maximum credits of E-495 per semester: 2.
- Grading will be traditional grade only.
