Irene Vernon Associate
Professor. B.A., Native American Studies, University of California
at Berkeley; M.A., History, University of New Mexico; Ph.D.,
Ethnic Studies, University of California at Berkeley.
Professor Vernon holds a joint appointment in the English
Department and the Center for Applied Studies in American
Ethnicity (CASAE). She specializes in Native American studies
and is trained in Ethnic Studies and American Literature.
As well, Professor Vernon reviews articles and manuscripts
for the English Journal, University of Nebraska
Press, and the University of Oklahoma Press, American
Indian Literature and Culture Series. Her research interests
include Native American health and healing issues, particularly
HIV/AIDS. Her book Killing Us Quietly: Native Americans
and HIV/AIDS (2001) has been followed by articles published
in the American Indian Culture and Research Journal,
American Indian Quarterly and Wicazo Sa Review.
She is currently working on several grants, one for the Centers
for Disease Control which provides technical HIV/AIDS service
to tribes and the Office of Juvenile Justice providing research
and assistance on tribal juvenile justice concerns.
