Gerald Delahunty Assistant

of California, Irvine.
Professor Delahunty teaches courses
in theoretical syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse
analysis, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, history of the
English language, and Irish literature. He has published
on pragmatics, syntactic theory, sociolinguistics, and Irish
archaeology. He is the author of articles, papers, and reviews
in such publications as Written Communication; Linguistic Analysis; Pragmatics;
and Linguistics, Structure
Meaning and
Acquisition in Spanish; and English
Journal.
With J. J. Garvey, he is the author of Communication,
Language, and Grammar: a Course for Teachers (McGraw-Hill,
1994). His research is concerned with how pragmatic principles
interact with linguistic form to determine meaning.
