The major in economics offers students the prospect of obtaining a well-rounded education by requiring courses in social sciences, arts and humanities, natural sciences, quantitative analysis, and communication. In addition to the required courses, the major is structured to ensure considerable flexibility in the choice of courses. For example,

  • there are 45 semester credit hours of free electives. Our majors use the flexibility to choose a second major, or one or even two minors. Wise choices enable students to lead full and rewarding lives, to gain employment upon graduation, and to gain admission to graduate programs.
  • The 33 credit hours of required economics courses help students develop critical thinking skills, the economic way of thinking, communication skills, and an understanding and ability to analyze real world problems.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Our majors who choose to end their formal education with graduation are employed in a variety of positions such as managers, management trainees, account specialists, sales managers, sales representatives, bond traders, field auditors, insurance brokers and teachers. They are employed by some of the top organizations in the U.S. such as Coors, Colorado State University, Federal Reserve System, Merrill Lynch, State of Colorado, U.S. Comptroller of the Currency and Qwest. If this list is too uneventful for you, let us remind you that economics majors have been the President of the United States, a U.S. Senator, a Governor of Colorado, an All-Pro quarterback and a rock star. The choice is yours! In addition, a significant number of economics majors from Colorado State pursue graduate work and have obtained advanced degrees in business, economics, law, public policy and public health. They have graduated from prestigious universities such as California, Chicago, Harvard, Minnesota, Stanford and Wisconsin.

STUDENT MAJORS

The Department has averaged about 300 majors at any one time over the past five years. A few important descriptive facts about our majors: roughly 20% are women, 20% are ethnic minorities, 20% are from out-of-state, and 1% are from abroad. The major attracts some truly gifted students who have participated in, or graduated from, the Honors Program, who have won major university awards such as the Colorado Scholars, Presidential, Soctron, Ludlow, Scott and Westfall scholarships, and have been elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa and other honor societies. Finally, the Department has an undergraduate economics club and an honorary society.
