GRADUATE PROGRAM - Financial Support

The department is frequently able to offer Graduate Teaching Assistantships to well-qualified incoming domestic students in both the MA and PhD programs, with the expectation of continuing support through the normal duration of the degree program, conditional on satisfactory academic progress.  Assistantships include a monthly stipend for the 9-month academic year, and a full tuition scholarship.  To be considered for support, applicants need only check the relevant box on the application form.  Occasional summer support may also be available.

We are generally unable to offer financial support to international students.  By state law, international students are prohibited from receiving “resident” status for tuition purposes, which makes it financially impossible for the department to fund tuition scholarships as we do for domestic students.  We are aware that these rules keep us from supporting otherwise highly qualified candidates, and we regret that result.  If you are an international student who is otherwise qualified for admission, and you can find other sources of support for your years of study, of course we would be pleased to have you in the program.
