The Department of Exercise and Sport Science was formed in 1987 from the reorganization of the former Department of Physical Education in response to the rapid changes of the discipline, which demanded a diversification of the curriculum. The department offers a strong interdisciplinary, science-based approach to the study of exercise, sport, and wellness.
The department is part of the College of Applied Human Sciences, which houses seven other departments and over 3,000 students. Within the department, there are 18 full-time FACULTY members, a number of part-time members, and 4 full-time staff members.
The Department of Exercise and Sport Science has an undergraduate enrollment of over 700 students. The UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM consists of three concentrations that lead to the bachelor of science degree: (1)Sports Medicine, (2) Teacher Education, and (3) Wellness Program Management.
The GRADUATE PROGRAM has an enrollment of approximately 30 students who may obtain a M.S. degree in one of two concentration areas: (1) Exercise Science or (2) Wellness Management. Students may also major in the Exercise and Nutrition Interdisciplinary Program, which is offered in conjunction with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.
Students in the undergraduate and graduate programs select from a variety of COURSES taught in the department. All undergraduate students at Colorado State University are required to complete 2 credits of physical education/wellness courses. To meet this requirement, the department administers a large ACTIVITY PROGRAM of basic instruction. In addition, the Colorado State ADULT FITNESS PROGRAM provides an overall wellness program for adults in the Fort Collins community, while serving as a laboratory experience for undergraduate and graduate students in the department.
