Letter from State 4-H Office
Attention - CSU – User Fees = Increase for 4H statewide.
State 4-H Fees to be raised for the 2010-2011 4-H Year!
Jeff Goodwin, Assistant Director for Colorado
4-H Youth Development Programs, recently announced that the $5 state 4-H fee that has been collected from Colorado 4-H members in organized clubs for the last five years will be raised to $15 for the 2010-2011 4-H year. The decision to make this change was made after much discussion with 4-H agents from around the state. The 4-H Roundtable (State 4-H Advisory Committee) was also consulted extensively o
n this issue.
Goodwin states that this increase was needed in order to maintain state staff and special project support that is necessary to manage the Colorado 4-H program.
Goodwin also adds that he understands how this fee increase might put a strain on some county 4-H programs or 4-H families given the current economic climate; however, this is why the announcement is being made over a year and a half before it is to take effect.
Families must also remember that when the $15 state 4-H fee is carried out over 12 months it equates to $1.25 per month per 4-H member—or 4 cents per day. Even when county fees and project costs are added in, 4-H is still the biggest and best bargain in town when it comes to youth development programs.
As always, if a family with economic struggles wants their kids to be in 4-H, we will find a way to make it happen. If you are in such a situation, please contact the county Extension office for information about scholarship programs or alternative payment plans that can be set up so that every young person has the opportunity to be in 4-H.
If you have questions about this increase, feel free to contact the SMB Extension office at 327-4393
or even speak to Jeff Goodwin at 970.491.1152.

How does this affect San Miguel Basin 4H Program, and the bottom line for each of you? Prior to 2010, 4H members and their families have spent an annual $15 enrollment fee in San Miguel. According to our local District 10 4H program – fellow 4H offices;
(Mesa, Delta and Montrose) on average are collecting twice that much at an enrollment fee that equaled $30!

Annual Photography Contest Honors
Colorado Agriculture

From cattle grazing in a mountain meadow to wheat blowing in the wind on the eastern plains, Colorado agriculture is evident across the state.
The 12th annual “Colorado…it's AgriCultural” photography contest is seeking entries as a way to celebrate Colorado agriculture.

“It is always so exciting to see the diversity of Colorado agriculture depicted in contest entries,” said Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp. “This annual photo contest honors the importance of Colorado's agriculture industry to the state economy, and I encourage photographers of all ages to enter.”

Entries must be submitted to the Colorado Department of Agriculture with an official entry form by December 31, 2009. All photographs must be taken in the 2009 calendar year and must relate to Colorado agriculture in some way. Prizes will be awarded in four subject areas: crops, livestock, people and agritourism.

Judging will be based on theme, creativity and technical quality. The photographer whose picture best depicts the “spirit” of Colorado agriculture will receive a $150 gift card, and category winners will receive a “Colorado…it's AgriCultural” prize pack. All winning photographs will be displayed in the Beede-Hamil Agriculture Building at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado.
