Family & Consumer Sciences

Family & Consumer Sciences offers informal classes structured to help parents of all ages deal with the tough questions faced in parenting children and teens today. Topics include discipline, communication, responsibility, and expectations. Classes are also offered to help participants learn to balance income and expenses, make better financial decisions and deal with end of life issues. Programs for childcare providers contribute to the improved quality of care and the development of children.

Extension Nutrition Programs (Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) & Food Assistance Nutrition Education (FANE)) offer free nutrition classes to limited resource families, pregnant and parenting teens, youth and seniors. Nutrition educators collaborate with individuals and other agencies to provide education about healthy eating, handling food safely and getting the most for the food dollar.

Care to Wait
A Life Changing Experience for Families and Their 12-14 Year-old Middle School Youth

Colorado State University Extension-Pueblo County has been selected to participate in a new national program that will benefit families with youth 12-14 years old. CSU Extension is currently taking names for the next series of 11 weekly workshops titled CARE to Wait. The program focuses on building family strengths during the difficult transitions that occur in middle school years. Parents and youth participate together and separately in activities that build strong family relationships, positive communication between youth and parents, goal setting, decision-making, problem solving and refusal skills, especially around the area of sexual decision making and abstinence. This is a great chance for parents to have open discussion with their youth about important life decisions.

Make it a family night out - with benefits! Families will enjoy a free dinner prior to each session. Sibling care and activities are also provided free of charge. Participants who complete classes and confidential surveys will receive $150.00. Middle School youth will receive a $50.00 gift card to a store, movie theater, or restaurant.

This program is offered through the Colorado State University Extension DARE to Be You program and is funded by the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. Space is limited to the first 20 families. To register or for more information, call Pam or Christine at 719-583-6566.
