National Western Stock Show Catch-A-Calf Contest

They come from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming to compete in National Western Stock Show's longest running program of practical beef cattle management. In just over 70 years, the Catch-A-Calf Contest has awarded nearly 3,000 steers to 4-H members hailing from the western United States.
The program is designed so successful participants catch a calf, feed it, and return with the animal one year later as a market steer. The market animals are judged on rate of gain, quality of fitting, and carcass quality. The exhibitor is judged on showmanship, their record book, and a personal interview.

The 2010 Catch-A-Calf schedule includes the placing of the 2009 calves in the Stadium Arena on Jan. 10 at 8 a.m. Catch-A-Calf contests in the Coliseum are held during the morning and matinee rodeo performances on Saturday, Jan. 16, and the matinee and evening performances on Sunday, Jan. 17.
4 H livestock members: Would you like to catch a calf at the one of the rodeo performances at the 2010 National Western Stock Show and show it the following year at Stock Show (2011)? Listed below are the rules for this contest.

1. Contestants must be 12 18 years old.
2. Interest in beef cattle and production.
3. Must have the facilities to keep and feed a beef animal.

Like Photography? Want to see your photos hanging in the McKee 4-H Building?

Calling all 4-H youth who like photography: We are looking for great pictures that represent the six Larimer County communities named in our McKee 4-H Building. As you all know, our six breakout rooms in the 4-H building are the Berthoud, Loveland, Fort Collins, Estes Park, LaPorte and Timnath rooms. We would love to have photographs, taken by Larimer County 4-H youth, which represent those six communities. If you would like to select one of the six communities and then take photographs within that community that represent it best, we are looking for volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Wendy at 498-6000.

Promote National 4-H Week: October 4-10
National 4-H Week is designed to promote the 4-H Youth program and kicks off the 2010 enrollment year! Let’s all work together this year to promote 4-H where you are, in your realm of influence. We encourage each 4-H Club to hold some type of promotional event in your local school or community.
Some Club activities to consider are: placing flyers and posters in your school, store window displays, newspaper stories and information booths at supermarkets, discount stores, or other high traffic businesses. The Extension Office also has flyers that can be handed out to help promote the program. How about asking a friend to join 4-H!
