Make your own culinary Herbs of Provence mixture. This is a blend of dried spices used for grilling fish and meats, originally from southern France. Collect and dry fresh basil, rosemary, marjoram, thyme and bay leaf. Optional herbs include fennel seeds and lavender. Use proportions of herbs which suit your individual taste. Store in a covered container for later use.

Yellow jacket stings can be immediately treated with a clean cloth soaked in vinegar. Use yellow colored traps from your nursery to diminish the numbers of this pesky insect—just remember that you’re only catching workers, not queens.

Fall blooming crocuses need to be planted now for bloom next summer. These bulbs are best placed in areas of existing groundcovers so that tender growth can be protected from summer heat. These bulbs add delightful color when the August garden needs it the most.

Rudebeckia rules in the later summer garden. Find a perennial version of this late summer bloomer known to many as Black Eyed Susan. Together with Echinacea (coneflowers) they are highly attractive to butterflies.
