Animal Premises I.D.

The USDA and Colorado Department of Agriculture need your help in implementing an Animal Premises ID program. The goal of the program is to identify the locations where livestock of all species are held. This will assist state veterinarians and others in responding to animal disease issues.

If livestock diseases such as foot and mouth disease or avian influenza enter the United States, disease movement will need to be monitored and quarantines may be necessary. This process can occur more quickly and effectively if the location of animals is known.

By establishing a database of animal premises, a rapid response becomes possible. Rapid response helps to contain diseases and protect livestock in uninfected regions.

Currently, premises registration is voluntary and free. In the future, registration will probably be mandatory and there may be a fee.

The Animal Premises ID program is a component of a National Animal Identification System (NAIS) currently in development stages.

Animal Premises ID registration can be completed on-line by following this link:

You may download a mail-in form here:

Animal Premises ID mail-in form

-----------------------------------------------------

If using the mail-in form, enter your street address for your physical address (e.g. 2656 West County Road 70). If you happen to know your GPS coordinates, include that information. Do not list a post office box. Most small livestock operations should check "individual" for your business organization and "production unit" for your business type.

If you have any questions about this program or how to sign up, contact:

Ernie Marx or Wendy Woerner at the Larimer County Extension Office (498-6000).
