Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
|
The Painted Lady butterfly migration has come through
Colorado. They begin their migration in the deserts of northern Mexico
and travel north through the United States and Canada south of the
Arctic. Painted lady butterflies look similar in appearance to the
Monarch butterfly but only smaller with a mottled color. These butterflies
have a big appetite for Canada, Scotch, and musk thistles where they
lay eggs on the tops of host plant leaves. The caterpillars live in
silk nests and eat the leaves.
