Colorado Master Gardener Volunteers to Teach with Habitat for Humanity

The Colorado Master Gardeners in Denver have formed a rewarding collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. The MG begins the day at a Habitat site with a short how-to-plant demonstration, then directs and advises a crew of volunteers as they plant trees, shrubs and ground covers around the new homes.  Many of the volunteers are prospective new homeowners who have been approved for interest-free home loans and are now paying back with 500 hours of "sweat equity". Other community volunteers this year came from church groups, a meditation society, high-tech companies, Americorp and local colleges.  These highly motivated and enthusiastic workers asked a host of great gardening questions.

Thanks are extended to Denvers Colorado Master Gardener volunteers who helped at various Habitat landscaping projects this summer: Charlene Byers, Betty Jo Cahill, Steve Kanewske, Margot Thompson, Paige Merriman and Connie Rayor.

The relationship with Habitat is gradually being worked out and should produce more benefits for both organizations and the community in years to come.
