By Mary Small, urban integrated pest management agent, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Problem: Firewood piled near the fireplace has sawdust underneath it. Solution: A number of insects can emerge from firewood after it is brought indoors to warm temperatures. The insects are producing the sawdust. Fortunately, they won't harm people or pets and usually die shortly after emerging. The best way to deal with these insects is to store firewood outside until you plan to use it.
