Looking for summer plants that do well in the shade -- beneath a tree or in indirect light on the north side of a building? Try pansies, impatiens and lobelia. Coleus does well in the shade, as do begonias. Try foxglove and forget-me-nots. Look for less well-known plants such as browallia, torenia (wish-bone flower) and mimulus (monkey flower). If you have a particularly dark or shady area, you may want to consider plants other than annuals. Photograph of Torenia by Judy Sedbrook.
